About me - storying

I notice stories. It may be through drawing that I discover the story of a song, or through speaking that the story of a wordless communication appears. Or perhaps an improvisation on the viola is the story – of the daylight, or of another’s hope. So, I wonder about authorship and what it means.

Stories are all around us, but go by different names: policies, news reports, history, diaries and more. Many people don’t use language, and for nearly thirty years, working with people in music therapy, I have tried to listen to the meaning in these musical encounters, for they are stories, too.

But there is a hierarchy among the different modes of sharing stories, and I wonder why? Stories are about connection; they use what they need, whether words, music, images or something else. I invite you to be part of the story.

How I notice stories

Exploring colour, line, and shape may be my path to noticing or drawing a story. I often wonder which comes first…

Improvising music with viola, voice, or other instruments, I notice patterns and musical meanings. If I am left wondering what they are, that is part of the story, too.

Watching a mobile sculpture is a work-out for my imagination, a chance to wonder and notice countless possibilities of meetings and happenings.
